Since 2013, asylum seekers have been detained in asylum detention facilities.[1] As of March 2022, the only functioning asylum detention facility is Nyírbátor, with a capacity of 105 places.
According to the law, asylum detention can be carried out in places designated for this purpose, or in a healthcare institution on an exceptional and duly justified basis, with the assistance of the body established for carrying out official police business.[2]
The two transit zones in Röszke and Tompa can accommodate 450 and 250 persons respectively. Due to the closure of the transit zones in May 2020, at the end of 2021 there were no asylum seekers detained there.[3]
